I went to First Fridays on Abbot Kinney in Venice last week – what a great scene. It was an opportunity to sample some of the food trucks we’ve been covering. I saw Kogi, of course, the Grilled Cheese Truck, the Border Grill Truck, World Fare’s Double Decker Bus, India Jones, Calbi, and many more. All the merchants stayed open late, some had musicians, some had artists painting out front. My only complaint was that every bar packed to the gills, and we couldn’t get a drink anywhere. Because the line was too long at Kogi, we chose Calbi as our first stop. Clearly we’re not the only ones who had this idea. Calbi was pretty good, except they put shredded cheese on top of the taco, which I thought was a weird choice. My friend Jay liked it though. Next stop: India Jones. I loved their “Frankies” which was basically a mini-burrito, but with roti instead of a tortilla. I had the paneer, which was fabulous. Jay had a curry dish which was served over basmati rice. We dined on overturned buckets on the side of the road… Heaven.
