Under the state constitution, marriage is a basic civil right for all Californians—gay or heterosexual. Same-sex marriage does not deprive opposite-sex couples of any rights. That's according to the State Supreme Court, in a 4 to 3 ruling written by Chief Justice Ron George. The decision throws out the state's legal ban enacted in 1977 and reaffirmed by the voters eight years ago in Proposition 22.
