David Ryu was sworn in yesterday, one of two newly elected members of the Los Angeles City Council. He's the first Korean-American ever to serve and only the second member of Asian descent. He's recently been a hospital administrator and he styled himself as an "outsider" when he ran against City Hall veteran Carolyn Ramsay. His district includes Sherman Oaks, then stretches over the Hollywood Hills to Silver Lake, Hancock Park, the Miracle Mile and a small part of Koreatown. It's relatively affluent and engaged in local politics, and Ryu's claims to be an "outsider" have created high expectations that he will "shake things up.
