Governor Schwarzenegger to Announce Re-Election Bid

Hosted by Warren Olney Sep. 15, 2005
Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Republican Governor of a Democratic state, elected on the promise of bringing the parties together, but life in Sacramento has made him increasingly partisan. Tomorrow in San Diego, the Governor is expected to tell Republicans what they want to hear, that he's running for re-election next year. Reporters and political pros in both parties agree there was no choice but an early announcement because of this November's special election. Is the early announcement a sign of weakness or strength? Will it rally the faithful and drum up money for ballot propositions that are way behind in public opinion polls? As the next battle begins between Republicans and Democrats, we hear from a journalist who covers the Capitol as well as state party leaders. Reporter's Notebook: LA Times Names New Editor of Editorial Pages After just 14 months as editor of the LA Times editorial pages, Michael Kinsley has left on what he calls "a bitter note." One thing Kinsley says he deserves credit for is hiring his assistant, who will now be Kinsley's replacement. Andr-s Martinez came from the New York Times, where he was an editorial writer and a finalist for last year's Pulitzer Prize. Born in Mexico 39 years ago, he's also a lawyer with a degree in Russian history from Stanford.
