Today, for the first time, the US promised direct aid to the Free Syrian Army in the struggle against President Bashar al-Assad. Speaking in Rome, Secretary of State John Kerry announced an immediate additional $60 million "in non-lethal assistance to support the coalition in its operational needs." Some in the opposition were disappointed, hoping for weapons and equipment that rebels have been requesting.
