LA Braces for Racially-Charged Police Abuse Verdict

Last year-s videotape showed a white cop slamming Donovan Jackson onto the hood of a car and punching him in the face, even though the young black teen was handcuffed. This week-s trial of that Inglewood police officer has evoked reminders of the 1992 case in which Los Angeles Police officers were videotaped beating Rodney King and their acquittal by an all-white jury which sparked a massive civil disturbance. Jeremy Morse-s jury has only one black member, and prosecutors are having a hard time proving that Morse used excessive force. Why is the video not enough? Is the system stacked in favor of law enforcement? What-s the community doing to prepare for the verdict? We hear from a reporter covering the trial, a former federal prosecutor, community and civil rights advocates, and an attorney who represented one of the cops in the Rodney King trial. Making News: US Suspends Legal Action for UK Suspects at Guantanamo Yesterday, Britain-s Prime Minister electrified Congress and provided support for President Bush. Today, the United States agreed to suspend legal proceedings against British suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay. Mary Dejevsky is diplomatic editor and former Washington bureau chief of London-s Independent. Reporter's Notebook: Presidential Candidate Carol Moseley Braun So far, there is only one woman campaigning to be the Democratic nominee for President in next year-s election. The first African American woman elected to the Senate, Carol Moseley Braun claims that her political and diplomatic experience give her an edge up on the rest of our field. We continue our series of interviews with Democratic hopefuls with the former senator from Illinois and ambassador to New Zealand.
