After 3000 people were killed and the World Trade Center was brought to the ground, the New York Police Department established a special unit to conduct non-stop surveillance in Muslim neighborhoods. Now it appears that such stereotyping has done more harm than good for national security, and the so-called Demographics Unit has been disbanded. The NYPD’s Demographics Unit has been the subject of two federal lawsuits and criticism by civil rights groups, as well as the FBI. The new Police Commissioner, William Bratton, says it will be no more. Washington Post reporter Adam Goldman is author of, Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America.
