Desperate people — men women and children — are camped out on the French side of the English Channel, ready to risk their lives getting to England. Refugees from Africa and the Middle East have relatives there, and they speak the language. But those who make it often receive a harsh welcome. It's a microcosm of the migration crisis enveloping the European Union — involving both asylum seekers and economic refugees. Political leaders are challenged to protect human rights — at the same time preserving traditional cultures and maintaining standards of living.
