Last month, federal immigration agents served several farms and packing houses in the Central Valley with notices that they would be conducting I-9 audits, according to a Fresno-based agriculture advocacy group. Undocumented immigrants often use a fake social security numbers when filling out I-9 forms, which are used to prove you’re a U.S. citizen or are legally allowed to work in the country. Could work-site audits hit the Central Coast next, and what would that mean for local growers?
