Annie Oakley, Belle Star and Calamity Jane are just a few of the women who helped create the legend of the Wild West. Meanwhile, however, thousands of others tamed the west on their farms and homesteads without firing a single bullet. Today’s western women don’t have to carry a six-shooter or get their water from a well, but that doesn’t mean their lives are easy. A new movie takes a look at four women in modern-day Montana. It stars Michelle Williams, Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and newcomer Lily Gladstone and is based on stories by the Montana writer Maile Meloy. Madeleine speaks to the director.
