Coming of age is a common theme in art, especially movies. That moment between childhood and adolescence is full of drama. A new movie set in a Cincinnati housing project with an all African American cast takes on the subject in an innovative way. The Fits, the directorial debut of filmmaker Anna Rose Holmer, is about an 11-year-old girl named Toni who becomes fascinated by a group of older girls in a dance troupe which she joins before seeing some of them come down with mysterious seizures, convulsions and fainting – ‘the fits’. The film has little dialogue, but is more like a dreamy meditation on Toni’s world.
