Energized by a trip to Costa Rica during which he jammed with local musicians after sunset, pianist John Carroll Kirby fills us in on his adventure on the Calypso-influenced song “Oropendola.”
“The oropendola is a very cool bird that lives in a sac-like hanging nest,” Kirby explains. “There was a tree full of them outside where I stayed that woke me up every morning at 5 a.m., so I had to write a song about them.”
