Austin-based Charley Crockett is on the shortlist for Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Association Award at Americana Fest in Nashville in September and he’s in great company.
A leader in the traditional country and folk tradition, Crockett followed up on his 2022 breakthrough recording Man From Waco by writing his new album $10 Cowboy while on tour, winding through the backroads of the country, at truck stops, in the back alleys of venues, and on the back of his tour bus. “A ramblin’ man like me, a genuine transient, is in a pretty damn good position to have something to say about America,” illustrates Crockett.
And that he did. Though he did not intend to make a themed recording, the album paints a picture of a person hustling to get by. Let’s turn to the title track.
