On Aug. 30, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released Wild God. It’s the 18th studio album from the group and their first since 2019’s Ghosteen. I caught up with Nick at Electric Lady Studios in New York City to look back at his very personal transformation over the past five years: A period of intense creativity and reflection, propelled in part by the loss his 15 year-old son Arthur, and the subsequent creation of The Red Hand Files, an online open forum in which Nick responds to deeply philosophical and sometimes hilarious letters from fans all around the world. In this extended conversation we also cover his involvement in Shrek 2 (I was the Music Supervisor), and we step through a few standouts from the new album and beyond.
