Nothing hits quite like a visit with old friends. While plenty of our MBE Guest DJ sets convey that feeling, there's a subtle-yet-crucial difference between a solid rapport… and deep shared history. Such is the case with Ale and Frosty — in the midst of celebrating the 24th anniversary of revolutionary internet radio station and LA cultural institution dublab, the two drop a heady mix of sounds representing the past, present and “future roots radio” at the core of dublab’s ethos.
Catch Novena in dublab’s archive alongside fellow KCRW DJ Wyldeflower, and get immersed in the Anthony Valadez milieu with his dublab sets dating back to 2006. Despite the richly connected past, and a set spanning combined dublab and KCRW favorites through the years — think: Jimetta Rose, Julia Holter, Alice Coltrane, Mia Doi Todd, Dntel, and Daedelus (to name a few) — the conversation is eagerly attuned to the future. Ale notes that the bulk of dublab’s current programming is coming from folks in their early twenties, which is the surest sign imaginable that “future roots radio” is a perpetual movement.
And in the immediate future, celebrate 24 years of dublab in proper style with 24 continuous hours of festivities at Jerry Moss Plaza at The Music Center (DTLA). It’s all happening for free from 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The performances on deck are as eclectic as a KCRW fan could ever hope for. From the kick-off tribute set to house music legend Frankie Knuckles by Monalisa, to morning aerobics with Pony Sweat… not to mention treats scattered throughout from Jerry Paper, Automatic, and more. Grab all the details, and RSVP here.
