KCRW Global Beat México is coming at you LIVE with Sgt. Papers, Parque de Cometas and Marion Raw! Happening at The Paramount, located in the historic neighborhood of Boyle Heights, which just so happens to have KCRW’s very own DJ José Galván as their booker. Located above The Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory (BHAC), a non-profit committed to teaching local Boyle Heights youth professional and creative skills in the music and arts industries, The Paramount works closely with its downstairs neighbors by offering students the opportunity to staff music events and work directly with featured artists. All proceeds from this event will be donated to BHAC
KCRW’s Global Beat is a series highlighting emerging artists from around the world. Our second season takes us to México, hosted by KCRW DJ Raul Campos alongside our curators, Mexico City DJ and music supervisor Junf, festival director and music consultant Monica Saldaña, and NPR’s Betto Arcos.
About Sgt. Papers
Sgt. Papers, is a duo formed in 2017 by brothers Iván and Felipe García, originally from the city of Hermosillo in the heart of the Sonoran desert. That same year Sgt. Papers Lonely Psych Punk Band released, the band's first material independently to critical acclaim in the independent scene in Mexico and other countries. This led to several tours in Mexico and the United States as well as being on the Festival circuit. Later in 2019 their second album, Me Hiciste Brujería, came out, which was also well received and opened many more doors to international festivals. At the same time, an independent band scene begins to develop in the northwest of the country, specifically in Hermosillo, where both Felipe and Iván actively participate as promoters, producers and in other projects, making local collaborations for video clips and other content. All material from Sgt. Papers until their 3rd album SGTP, (which will be released this 2021 under the DIW label) is produced, recorded and mixed by the band.
About Parque de Cometas
Parque de Cometas is an experimental pop project started by Andrés Corella in 2016. Around 2018, Mitzi Licona, Isaac Conde, Rodolfo Hernandez and Melissa Lunar, are added to the lineup and begin reworking a collection of songs that Corella had started composing while attending college. Creating a collaborative atmosphere, Parque de Cometas, release their first two singles, "Gente Violenta / Azoteas" and "Justo a Tiempo". In 2020, Parque de Cometas independently publish Paseo, an energetic album that combines elements of psychedelic pop and post-rock, with intimate lyrics and images that fluctuate between the everyday and the surreal.
About Marion Raw
Marion Raw is a singer songwriter, a third culture kid, raised in airports & hotels. Making music her home early on, Marion emigrated from Mexico when she was 2. Subject to the whims of her ex beauty queen mother, they moved around a lot by the time Marion was 12, leading to endless daydreaming, cocooned between headphones and suitcases, in search of belonging. Raw has a multidisciplinary background as a singer songwriter and visual artist. Drawing on her multifaceted biography, her work centers around identity, family and of course, love in all the wrong places. Raw has been the recipient of a scholarship and FONCA award for her project entitled Mummy Dearest (2009), a mixed media piece that explored mental health and gender. Shifting her focus from the visual arts to the musical, she then went on to dive deep into music forming a band in Mexico City called Love la Femme. Marion Raw is currently promoting the roll out of her second LP due out in summer 2022.
About Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory (BHAC)
Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory (BHAC) advocates for the development of a new framework toward diversity in the creative arts, media, and technology fields—one that is socially and economically inclusive, and accurately reflects the City of Los Angeles in terms of ethnicity, gender, and age. The most effective way to do this, we understand, is by dismantling the many barriers to equal opportunities in the arts and creative industries, so that they, as well as those interested in pursuing such careers therein, can truly grow and thrive.
