KCRW Debut

Good evening, Fanatics! This is our first broadcast in our new location, KCRW FM. I am surprised that we made such a smooth transition, last week we were at Indie, and this week we are here.

For those of you who have been listening to our show for weeks, months, years, thanks for making the move down the dial to re-join us. Hopefully, you will find tonight’s show another dose for what ails you and again, thanks for staying with us.

For you loyal KCRW listeners, hello! To give you a brief overview of this show, here are some fast facts: I was at Indie 103 for several years, from 2004 until last week. The show was called Harmony In My Head, named after the great Buzzcocks song. For me, the name pertains to the very spirit of this show. If you listen, you will see that we go all over the record store. We jump from decade to continent to genre because I think there’s great music from all over since the advent of recorded music. So, get ready to careen wildly every Saturday evening from 6 to 8 pm right here.

Just so you know, I work on these play lists for several days, sometimes for weeks in advance, moving things around, adding new music, so that every Saturday night, we get the best out of our 120 minutes! Since I have only two hours a week with you, I try to make it matter. I have a rule for myself: I buy at least one record every day. So, there is always a steady flow of music, new and old, coming in. Usually, by the Friday afternoon before the broadcast, I have it all done and post the tracks we will get to and anything else I think is pertinent right here on this page. Hopefully, this gets you interested and waiting for the show with breathless anticipation!

The bottom line is that I want you to have a great time listening to the show. We all have many heavy and complicated burdens and obligations in our lives, so, for at least this 120 minutes, we get to check out all kinds of music and kick off the weekend.

I honestly don’t know how this show fits in with what else is happening at KCRW and not to sound like a total jerk, I am not trying to fit in as much as I am trying to do two hours of music a week the way I want to. I don’t know how else to do it. Hopefully, that good intent will make for a show that holds your interest. I have always figured that listeners are just like me—bored easily, very impatient and most of all, extremely curious. SO, we are going go. We are going to go fast and far and deep every week. If what we’re trying to do with out little show isn’t to your liking, fair enough! Perhaps you will give it a few chances to grow on you before you tune out!

After I am done, Liza Richardson will be coming on immediately afterwards to take it to 10 PM and then Jason Eldridge takes it to the midnight hour. I think the three of us will make for an engaging six hours of music. It’s going to be great.

All the way at the bottom of the page are all the songs we will play tonight. I always bring some more music in case we need it. A couple of things to point out. The Grinderman track is from the Palermo Shooting soundtrack. It’s one of two Grinderman tracks on there. I had to get this soundtrack because there was no way we were not going to listen to obscure Nick Cave tracks!

Sleepy Sun: Last month, I was in Seattle WA to see a show and I heard an album called Embrace by a band called Sleepy Sun. I thought it was great and so I contacted the band and they generously sent me a copy. The album, released on LP and CD will drop in May. We will definitely be visiting this one more than once. If you liked the track of theirs you heard tonight and want to follow up, here’s some tour dates for the band. Make note, the LA date is just days away so don’t let it slip by.
