This week The Global Gig Guide gives you the skinny on Mariza at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Four Tet and friends at the Rose Centre for Earth and Space – part of New York’s American Natural History Museum, and WOMAD in New Zealand, featuring Fat Freddy’s Drop, Natascha Atlas and Sa Dingding.
Designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles is simply stunning and the acoustics sublime. The Queen of Fado music , Mariza returns by popular demand on March 18th. KCRW’s Tom Schnabel saw Mariza’s last show at this venue and told me it was not to be missed should she ever return. So now’s our chance!
From Los Angeles we head east to New York for One Step Beyond at the Rose Centre for Earth and Space– a six story sci-fi looking structure containing the Hayden Planetarium. One Step Beyond takes place inside the upper half of the planetarium, so you can literally dance under the stars while listening to the music of Four Tet, electronic wiz and recent Coldplay collaborator Jon Hopkins and up and star on the rise Mapei.
We have a pair of tickets to this cool event thanks to the Fader organization – you just have to get yourself to NYC if you don’t already reside there.
From New York we head to New Zealand for WOMAD, held March 13-15 in the lush Taranaki region of the north island . Set up by Peter Gabriel in the early 80’s, WOMAD provides a forum for different cultures to perform their music. The excellent line up includes Rokia Traore, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Sa Dingding, Gurrumul ,Natascha Atlas and Dengue Fever – who will also have their documentary ‘Sleeping Through The Mekon’ shown as part of the WOMAD film program.
GGG goes to LA, NYC and New Zealand!
