London-based artist Georgia Barnes, who records under just the name Georgia, has quickly become a recognized part of the city’s underground music scene. With her international, self-titled debut, she offers up an adventurous examination of the power of rhythm, which, given her history of playing drums for the likes of Kwes and Kate Tempest, makes perfect sense. On tracks like “Move Systems” and “Kombine,” Georgia smartly invokes a wide variety of rhythmic styles, from grime and hip-hop to post-punk and futurist electro-pop, and tops it off with a true songwriter’s sense of structure, while “Heart Wrecking Animals” uses a basic pulse and music-box-like tinklings to ground a tune that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Kate Bush record. All in all, it’s a great starting point for a career that promises to keep alert listeners engaged for years to come.
