Track Premiere: Mattson 2 'Essence'

Written by

SoCal’s finest good-time-vibers the Mattson 2 just announced a new forthcoming album Paradise (out June 7 on Chaz Bundick’s Company Records ), and with the announcement, the release of the single/video “Essence.”

Having spent the past couple years touring heavily, collaborating with Toro y Moi, and playing Coltrane’s A Love Supreme (amongst other projects) - it should come as no surprise that these skilled musical tacticians would flex their creative muscles for the next project. On Paradise, the Bros Mattson plug in the microphone for the first time on one of their recorded efforts and the results are impressive.

In the fuzzed out, purposefully VHS-style video for “Essence,” you’ll see the Mattson 2 floating through sublime vistas, beaches, and mountain scenescapes. Very apropos, as their crystalline, melodic surf-psych sound conjures up greener pastures and sunny days. "You're so special, you're so easy," they sing, almost inviting you to join them in these beautiful places.

From a press release about the album: it’s a bigger, bolder sound than their previous work; the brothers say they went into it trying out a conceptually new, cohesive sound - a new sonic palette to create from. It's a little bit of summer you can savor all year long.

Keep this track handy in the coming months, as we warm up to both summer and the album’s release. You can also see the Mattson 2 (HIGHLY recommended) in and around California (dates below).
