Protected from the L.A. heat, Anne Litt and I spent the best part of a day on holy ground at The Capitol Tower on Vine St to record a session with two KCRW favorites — actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and master guitarist/songwriter/producer M Ward. They combine their talents as She & Him.
As we were lead down the halls we were met by iconic photos of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Gene Vincent that lined the walls. I’ve walked those halls many times but my heart seems to beat faster each time I do.
We recorded the session in legendary Studio A, home to Nat King Cole’s piano. The room has impossibly high ceilings and ample room for the band to stretch out both physically and musically. Apart from recording at the Brill Building, She & Him couldn’t have been in a more perfect room as their music covers decades past with a fresh spin.

After several takes and a litany of phone interviews, Zooey and Matt sat down in the middle of the room for an easy, candid conversation with Anne.
They literally welcomed her with open arms and talked about music like old friends catching up. You can hear that in our session.
