KCRW DJs Anthony Valadez and Eric J. Lawrence, and opener Crystal Stilts will be getting the crowd pumped for a new headliner next Friday, May 6th at the Natural History Museum for the May installment of First Fridays.
Moving Units was announced yesterday as the headliner to rock the Diorama Hall this month. Their brand of funky, dance-punk has been a favorite of some of the DJs here at the station. I was sad to have missed them out in the dessert for their Coachella set on the main stage – they had the crowd jumping and moving despite their earlier time slot in the heat of the day!
Nic Harcourt hosted Moving Units back in 2004 on Morning Becomes Eclectic for a total grungey, punk set which you can stream here
Watching this performance is so interesting because listening to their newest album, “Tension War,” afterward feels like watching and listening to two different bands. It’s clear that Moving Units has expanded and evolved their sound, reaching to funky bass guitar rhythms and even some electronic dance-beats while still keeping their heavy electric guitar and symbol crashes.
Whatever their sound one thing can be said unequivocally: these guys will put on a great show! Tickets will be available at the door but I’d get there early as it tends to sell out and be a packed house. For more information you can head to the Natural History Museum’s web page.
You can check out some live Moving Units action from 2009 below and then get a free download of their new single “Pink Redemption” at their website.
