We here at KCRW have been fans of Pepi Ginsberg for quite some time; since 2008, to be precise, with the release of her debut solo album, Red. She’s a mercurial talent, and that’s a good thing, as she’s willing to take chances and move in different directions. Her latest project is called N-A-R-C, which stands for “New Age Real Change,” and it is a left-turn from her traditional guitar-based indie-rock into a more electronic production.
Her self-titled debut EP comes out today, February 26, on her own Inscape Records, making it a real home-grown kind of venture. The track “Anger Banger” reminds me of a protean Kate Bush or a more idiosyncratic Grimes, with Pepi’s distinctive vocals swooping over a percolating beat and an atmospheric electronic backdrop. It’s a fascinating direction for an artist who’s always worth keeping your eyes and ears on.
