We’re barely 3 months into the year, but my shortlist of fav albums for 2019 is already looking pretty healthy. Within that stack is the latest release from glam shockers - and an endorsement from KCRW’s own Henry Rollins - Le Butcherettes.
Their album bi/MENTAL stands out in their catalogue of 4 albums, as the most accessible to those who aren’t die hard fans. The guitars are still big and the flirtation with punk is also still present, but there’s maturity to this record brought about by front-woman Teri Gender Bender’s lyrics and voice that make it solid, start to finish.
Today we premiere the video for their latest single "in/THE END," which you may have heard on the KCRW Sunday night lineup. It’s a soft, melodic ballad with the dark undertones characteristic of Le Butcherettes.
It’s directed by Gus Black who’s worked with artist like Phoebe Bridgers and Gary Clark Jr., and it flushes out the lyrics into a message of transformation despite obstacles. It’s also about carrying the weight of a death in the family on one’s shoulders, as Teri Gender Bender explained it.
Le Butcherettes perform with L7 in May at the Glasshouse, and their album bi/MENTAL, produced by Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison, is currently available on all platforms.
