Goapele joined Garth Trinidad last night for a Guest DJ set to celebrate her upcoming role in “Sparkle”, which she called a “childhood fantasy come true”.
It’s a remake of the 1976 film about three singing sisters who form a girl group. The new version takes place in Detroit in the 1960s during the Motown era. (The film was choreographed by Fatima Robinson, who dropped by KCRW for a Guest DJ Project set!)
The sultry singer – Rolling Stone calls her the “spiritual love child of Sade and D’Angelo” – selected some of her own songs to play, giving us a preview for her August 2 concert at the El Rey, including a collaboration with Latin hip hop duo Los Rakas. (Garth will open the show with a DJ set).
