After a grip of excellent releases by Poolside, Joakim, Sidwho? and Anna Lunoe, I’ve come to trust Australia’s Future Classic label aesthetic. They traffic in lush, melodic downtempo disco and always reliable left-field electronic vibes.
Most recently, they’ve released a brand new self titled LP from 21 year old producer Flume.
Although the young dude still lives at home with his folks in Sydney, his first release “Sleepless” was one of XLR8R’s most downloaded tracks of 2011 and lead to his being hand picked by Triple J Radio to play at Australia’s Coachella-esque ALL Electronic festival on New Year’s Day 2012, Field Day. Flume’s album has a mellifluous mix of styles that marries hints of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder crew glitch with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs’ pop-tinged techno and James Blake’s dubsteppy R & B romanticism.
Flume’s sound is the throbby stuff candy-coloured headphones dream of and club sound systems wear well.
