Bon Iver – “AWARDS SEASON”

Lord, give us poetry. Led by songwriter and vocalist Justin Vernon, icons of big-feels indie-folk Bon Iver are back with a new EP and this stunning, stripped-back single. Vernon’s voice (and therefore his lyricism) hold fast at the forefront of this track’s production. At first you might think there’s only a sparsely arranged, wind-through-the-trees stream of sound to support that voice, but then a big brass break arrives to represent the love once held. Close your eyes and listen… Then play it again to appreciate the gorgeous B&W video accompaniment.

Jim Noir – “Out of Sight”

Life is short, so keep it playful with this chill ‘n’ smiley single from UK artist Jim Noir. Grounded by upbeat percussion and peppered with fanciful flute-like sounds and sweetly soaring synths — it’s one to lift your spirits out of any funk. Noir’s vocals will leave you with a feeling of sunny gratitude, as if you’ve just received a nice favor from a good bud whose only response was, “anytime, bro!” And to top it all off, there’s the video which is an exercise in prop allegory that’s sure to delight.

Samara Cyn – “Chrome”

A rich layer-cake of R&B, rap, and trip-hop elements — this single from Samara Cyn is built for late-night and good to the last bite. Deservedly dripping in confidence and relaxed-yet-sharp-edged in delivery, Cyn’s rapping feels innate (vocal fry is an asset when used like this). Her handling of R&B elements is likewise smooth and well-honed. With just enough cinematic interest (thunderclap anyone?) to balance the sensuality, this track is equally suited for the big screen and the bedroom. Get more of Cyn: Her EP The Drive Home is out this Friday (Oct. 25).

Chanel Beads – “Unifying Thought”

Presenting interwoven elements that should clash, but instead work together beautifully, and a full-gas no-breaks production style that’s somehow never too much… This brilliant track lands Chanel Beads firmly in the one-to-watch category. This vibes-forward single (which debuted last spring) and its NYC-set video are the centerpiece of his debut album Your Day Will Come. And as an artist, his days will definitely keep on comin’. Beads is fresh from a North American summer tour in support of big fave Mount Kimbie and we’re officially standing by for more.

Rivkah Reyes – “Another Vice”

You’ve likely heard all the discussion in the music critic echo chamber about country’s big comeback this year. And while we’re aware of the flashy pivots and spangles of certain popstars, we’re more here for the increased attention to folk and country “adjacent” indie tunes that are deeply inspired and all their own. Enter Rivkah Reyes, who makes art that spans styles, genres, and purposes. This softly powerful, acoustically-led single deserves the appreciation of a one-track spotlight.
