Will Slocombe got the idea for his first feature, Cold Turkey, while at a performance of the play August: Osage County. Towards the end of the second act, the family erupts in an epic display of dysfunction around the dinner table. Slocombe thought, what if you could build an entire indie movie around that one scene? So, he wrote the story (with some characters that were loosely based on himself and the people in his own family), pulled together a shoestring budget and a pretty impressive cast, including Alicia Witt and Peter Bogdanovich. Just in time for Thanksgiving, Slocombe shares his thoughts on what really happens when a family sits around a dinner table. Plus, what it was like when his own family saw his film for the first time.
