Sean Durkin formed Borderline Films with two of his classmates in 2005 while still a student at NYU. His feature directorial debut, Martha Marcy May Marlene, won him the Best Director award at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film follows Martha (played by Elizabeth Olsen), who escapes from a cult to live with her sister in Connecticut. Cutting abruptly from Martha's life in the cult to her life in Connecticut, the film allows the audience to share in her constant disorientation, and ultimately question whether her choice to escape has left her any better off.
