Jennifer Yuh Nelson has worked in animation with big emotional surprises hidden in action stories, such as her Emmy-winning direction of Tom McFarlane's Spawn. She brings that interest to bear as director of Kung Fu Panda 2. Nelson is the first woman to solely direct a big-budget animated feature film for a major Hollywood Studio.
Nelson talks about growing up on the action films of Jean-Claude Van Damme, anime and Bladerunner; how the hanging question left by Kung Fu Panda became the core for its sequel; the beauty and benefits of working in animation; working with the legendary Jackie Chan; and her love of European comic books and their pushed hyper-realism.
