Jeff Nichols, director of Loving, aims to represent both universality and specificity in his films. He depicts both the intimacies of a couple and the national platform of a cause in his most recent work, which chronicles Richard and Mildred Loving and their fight for the legalization of interracial marriage that led to a 1967 landmark Supreme Court ruling. Nichols talks about having his Arkansas roots and passion for race equality present in the film and about casting a Brit (Ruth Negga) and an Australian (Joel Edgerton) in this very American story.
