In honor of the Emmy nominations, The Business re-broadcasts Kim Masters’ interview with Damon Lindelof, showrunner of HBO’s “Watchmen.” The critically acclaimed series was the most-nominated show this year, netting 26 nominations.
Drawing his framework from the “Watchmen” comic series, showrunner Lindelof incorporated the 1921 massacre on Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He also shows a contemporary parallel universe where police wear masks to avoid accountability.
In this interview from November 2019, Lindelof discusses how he worked to hire a writers’ room that pushed back on his ideas. He also describes how Ta-Nehisi Coates’ writing inspired him to make his “Watchmen” adaptation about race.
