When Jim Doti became president of Chapman College in 1991, it was a small institution with little reach outside of Orange County. As Chapman University starts its academic year this week, Doti is leaving his position to go back to teaching economics, leaving behind one of the top private schools in the Western US. Doti undertook an aggressive expansion that saw the creation of new schools for law, business and film, the latter responsible for this summer's Netflix hit, Stranger Things. He dramatically increased fundraising, Chapman's public profile, yet did it with a deft hand that saw him at home as much with millionaires as with incoming freshman. Will Chapman be able to continue its success without him?
