One of the chief ways writers in Hollywood occupy their time is to sit around with each other and talk about how awful other writers' work is. These kinds of sessions – what I think the Chinese called, during their cultural revolution, Speaking Bitterness – only get really fun if the writer being trashed is more successful than anyone in the session. In fact, it's sort of a formula: the more successful that writer is, the longer and more personal the session gets...
