Snubs and Surprises in 2015 Emmy Nominations

Emmy nominations were announced this morning, and once again critics were crying "snub!"-- but not as often as in previous years. Critics loved FX's The Americans and the CW's Jane the Virgin, but neither show received much attention from the TV Academy. At least actress Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black finally got a nomination.

Fans of FX's The Americans were hoping this might be the year the drama would finally get some Emmy love. Alas, it was not the case, but they're not alone in feeling snubbed. A perennial Emmy favorite The Big Bang Theory was also passed over this year, while shows like Modern Family and Downton Abbey did manage to land several nominations, even though many argue both shows are feeling a little long in the tooth. The CW's Jane the Virgin was another snub. There was hope that Gina Rodriguez might get a best actress nomination, especially after winning a Golden Globe. There was however, increased diversity in the best actress in a drama category. For the first time ever there are two African American nominees--Taraji P. Henson from Empire and Viola Davis from How to Get Away With Murder. The most nominations went to HBO's drama Game of Thrones.
