Hi there,
Conversations with artists never fail to energize and devastate me all at the same time. In 2016, I met soon-to-be country music powerhouse Margo Price. She recorded a session for us at The Village Studio just after releasing her third album Midwest Farmer’s Daughter. She had recently lost a child, I was a new-ish mom, and we talked about struggle, loss, drinking too much, and redemption. Coincidentally, it was my birthday, and her spontaneous singing of “Happy Birthday” (it was my 50th) brought me to tears.
Last year, Margo and I picked the conversation back up at Vroman’s in Pasadena, where we discussed her autobiography, Maybe We’ll Make It, and the transparency and openness she shares in her story.
But we still had more to say. Earlier this year, we welcomed Margo back to KCRW HQ. This time she brought a three-piece (including her husband and songwriting partner, Jeremy Ivey) and we expanded upon her journey, what it means to be an outcast, writing her way through a new pregnancy, giving up drinking, and vulnerability.
It’s been a gift to get to know an artist so intimately, and have a front-row seat to her life’s travels and stumbles through my work with KCRW.
I hope it feels like a gift to you too. If you’ve had a warm feeling or your own moment of vulnerability as you get to know an artist through our live performances and candid conversations, I hope you, like me (I’m a $32 monthly member of KCRW!), will support live music and artist discovery.
Thank you for supporting KCRW and thinking of us during this Season of Giving Back.
