Don’t take our word for it, here are some reflections from recent KCRW interns:

Linda S. says…

“Interning at KCRW Santa Barbara was probably one of the most valuable experiences I’ve had throughout my college years. I have had several internships before, but this one was different thanks to all the events and hands-on learning that come with the package.

Thanks to KCRW, my resume shows I’ve had my own news segment air on one of the most respected news outlets in America. It shows I know how to put together stories, and successfully use radio equipment and certain software needed to put together a show. Not only that, I have had the opportunity to meet authors, artists and bands as well.

Because I decided to also volunteer for KCRW during and after my six months there, I got to connect with the local community on a professional yet relaxed level, creating valuable connections for future job applications.

Kathryn, Larry and Jonathan are all genuine people who made sure I felt welcome and part of the team. I’m grateful for the experience!”

Nicole S. says…

“I was lucky enough to be considered for the position and began one of the best 6 months of my life. My objective as the Marketing Intern? Know everything there is to know about the places to go and people to meet in the Santa Barbara area. Working with the KCRW team was such an incredible experience. Their knowledge, guidance and enthusiasm for radio fueled mine and made me excited to go into the station and be apart of it.

Although my internship ended last September I still like I’m apart of the KCRW family and am still in touch with my mentors and see them at events. I will be forever grateful for the opportunities and friendships I made, and know that unlike some internships, these are relationships I’m going to have for a lifetime.”

Keon Z. says…

“I really had a fantastic experience as a news intern for KCRW. Every day during my internship I learned something new that I could use in any radio or journalism-related position. Thanks to the guidance of SB’s producer and hosts, I was able to thoroughly develop my news writing, sound editing, and interview skills. Helping with KCRW events and doing field-reporting was invaluable and very rewarding. It was an exciting and fun opportunity, and I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with.”

Josh Z says…

“Some internships see the intern do little more than make coffees, file papers and respond to emails. My internship at KCRW, however, could not have been more different. It was hands-on and exciting, and every day was different.

One day I could be at a political protest collecting audio from protesters to use on air, another day I might be speaking to the office of our congressman, Salud Carbajal, to get information for a story.

The fact that the internship was so hands-on meant that I always felt like a valuable part of the team and felt like my ideas and contributions were truly valued. I feel so fortunate to have essentially been mentored by the supportive but friendly hosts and producer in the office.

I had so many exciting moments during my internship. Hearing my first story go live on air has to be one of the most thrilling moments of my life. Also, helping out at a live debate for the station was another moment where I felt honored to be a part of such an impressive company.

I would highly recommend this internship to anyone as it is educational, exciting and a fantastic opportunity to improve as a journalist.”
