Thomas Golubic

Host of The Great Escape

After formative years spent producing desperately romantic and unsolicited mix tapes for a host of bewildered young women, Thomas has parlayed that otherwise fruitless ability into a career as a radio and club DJ and as a music supervisor for film and television.

Thomas has been kicking around the KCRW hallways for some time, sharing hosting duties on Swingshift. But in Winter 2007, he officially took over the Tuesday night slot from midnight to 3am with his own show The Great Escape. The show blends his dueling passions for music and film, integrating a cinematic sensibility, along with film dialogue, score and sounds.  Each week aims to be a compelling soundtrack to a mashed up imaginary film.

Outside of the station, Thomas has been making his living as a music supervisor, record producer and DJ.  Thomas formed his company SuperMusicVision with pal and fellow KCRW DJ Gary Calamar (The Open Road) and enjoyed great success working on the HBO series “Six Feet Under,” which twice garnered the pair Grammy nominations. The pair were partly responsible for the stateside success of Australian artist Sia, who’s song “Breathe Me” was used in the final sequence of the final episode to the series.

As a record producer, Thomas has assembled various remix projects for EMI-Capitol Records and MGM, including reinterpretations of the work of Peggy Lee, the Beach Boys, Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther theme, and EMI’s Christmas Classics compilation ‘Merry Mixmas’.

In addition to a steady slate of music supervising and production projects, Thomas also focuses his energies on his two passion projects: SYNCHRONIZE and The Arbiters.
SYNCHRONIZE is a monthly residency in which Thomas breathes new life into classic and contemporary film by performing a live DJ re-score of a different feature film each month.   Thomas mixes his selections of music with original picture and dialogue, infusing classic films like ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, ‘Taxi Driver’ and ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’ with a new-found vibrancy and resonance.  He has produced and performed SYNCHRONIZE events for the Sundance Film Festival, the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival and the Dubrovnik International Film Festival, among others.

At the start of 2006, Thomas started up the Arbiters, a loose collective of artists creating mash-up remixes.  Presently, the Arbiters are moving toward creating and producing a legal full-length audio/visual mash-up album, and doing live performances with synchronized images. Thomas also holds weekly DJ residencies at Rambutan Thai Thursday nights in Silver Lake and Air Conditioned Friday nights in Santa Monica. He previously held residencies at a number of Hollywood clubs, including the Knitting Factory, The Oxygen Bar, Café Luna Sol and Café Des Artistes.
Thomas lives on a heavily wooded hillside overlooking downtown Los Angeles where, on occasion, he catches a few hours of sleep.
