Portugal. The Man's latest album In The Mountain In The Cloud is something of a revelation for me. After all, this is their sixth studio album. I have certainly been aware of the band, in fact we even had them perform live in our KCRW studios in August 2009 in support of their last release The Satanic Satanist. But as this album plays out, it becomes clear that In The Mountain In The Cloud is an expertly crafted collection of songs that draws on the joy, sadness, and complexity of life as its creative palette to represent the spirit of our time. A bold task to take on the vastness of human experience, but this record has a switched-on consciousness that makes it a rare find. As a singular achievement, In The Mountain In The Cloud is simply one of the best records of the year.
-- Jason Bentley, KCRW Music Director and host of Morning Becomes Eclectic
